Dental Misinformation on Social Media: Why Dentists Are Concerned

In today’s digital world, social media is full of tips, trends, and advice on just about everything, including your health. But when it comes to dental care, not everything you see online should be taken at face value. At By The Lake Dental, our experienced team of dentists is raising awareness about the dangers of online dental misinformation, especially among younger generations.
A recent 2025 Edelman Trust Barometer report revealed a troubling trend: younger generations, especially Gen Z and Millennials, are increasingly turning to non-experts like influencers and content creators for health advice. According to the study, 45% of people aged 18–34 admitted that uncertified voices influence their health decisions. Even more concerning? Nearly 60% of them later regretted acting on that advice.
The dental world is feeling the ripple effects. A new survey by the American Association of Endodontists confirmed what many dentists have long suspected: online misinformation is fueling fear, especially when it comes to procedures like root canals. Nearly half of Gen Z (48%) and Millennial (46%) respondents admitted they’re afraid of getting a root canal. For comparison, only 38% of the overall population shares that fear.
Why the anxiety? The source seems clear - 40% of Gen Z and 36% of Millennials say they often struggle to separate fact from fiction when it comes to online dental content. That TikTok video or viral post might look convincing, but it could be spreading myths that lead people to avoid essential care.
Dr. Steven J. Katz, President of the American Association of Endodontists, warns that this trend could have serious consequences. “Fear and misinformation are contributing to younger adults avoiding the dental office,” he explains. “Nearly half of both Gen Z and Millennial adults admitted to only going to the dentist when experiencing pain in their mouth.”
Skipping regular dental checkups can allow minor issues to become major problems. Untreated tooth decay can lead to infections, root canal complications, and even impact your overall health.
At our dental clinic, we’ve seen firsthand how misinformation delays treatment and affects patient outcomes. That’s why our mission at By The Lake Dental is to provide education, evidence-based guidance, and compassionate care to help our patients make informed decisions.
