Over the years, By The Lake Dental has been dedicated to promoting both oral and overall health in our communities in Ajax and Scarborough. Through modern, efficient, and effective dental care, our dental offices have helped hundreds of patients achieve healthier lives and brighter smiles. Now, we’re taking our mission even further - across borders!
Queen’s University Dental Brigade 2025 - Honduras: A Global Health Initiative
This year, we are thrilled to extend our commitment to oral health internationally. Our team is proud to volunteer with the Queen’s University Dental Brigade. Our co-founder Dr. Patricia Khamis-Silva, along with our co-op students (and perhaps future dentists), Sophia Silva and Jessica Bento, joined the Queen’s University Dental Brigade in Honduras from April 27th to May 3rd, providing preventive dental care, cleanings, and extractions while also leading educational workshops for both adults and children.
“We’re thrilled to join the Queen’s University Dental Brigade,” says Dr. Patricia. “Their focus on providing oral health support through education aligns perfectly with our ‘Aware and Care’ philosophy - ensuring patients understand the importance of oral care and how to maintain it with the help of dentists and dental professionals.”
Volunteer Activities with Dental Brigades
Our team will take part in various volunteer efforts in Honduras, including:
🦷 Dental Screening – Assisting in patient screenings and organizing the clinic based on urgency.
🦷 Dental Clinic Support – Shadowing licensed dentists, providing post-op care instructions, and helping with educational workshops.
🦷 Data Informatics – Assisting in logging patient information into an electronic medical record system for better healthcare coordination.
🦷 Dental Health Education – Leading workshops on proper brushing, flossing, fluoride treatments, and overall dental care.
🦷 Mobile Clinic Assistance – Supporting dentists in rural areas by assisting with procedures and educating communities on oral health.

From takeoff to our daily volunteer program, we’re excited to share highlights from Dental Brigades Honduras 2025 with everyone who has supported us and shown interest in our mission.
✈️ Honduras, Here We Come!
And we’re off! Honduras, here we come! We’re so excited to bring healthier smiles to communities in need.
🦷 First Day on The Field
We’re already meeting incredible patients and learning about their dental needs. Today we completed the dental screening, set up the clinic and played tocada (tag) with the locals of La Laguna.
🦷 Charla Day
Day 2 in the clinic was Charla day! We taught the kids the proper steps to brushing their teeth and learned some fun Honduran games!
🦷 Clinic Setup and DIY Fan
Day 3 in the clinic. We have continued to meet incredible patients. We provided cleanings, extractions, education, and even saw a wisdom tooth removal! See what our clinic setup looks like. And the DIY fan made by Dr. Patricia!
💙 Friendship, Games and Traditions
This past week, we met Damian - an intelligent and friendly 11-year-old from La Laguna who became our translator, guide, and friend. Self-taught in English through YouTube and movies, Damian helped us learn about local games such as tocada (tag) and peloto (soccer), as well as traditions and everyday life in the community, including moto taxis (a common form of transportation) and the town fair.
Thank you, Damian, for welcoming us into your community, becoming our friend, teaching us Spanish, translating, and demonstrating your intelligence every day!
Hasta la próxima (Until next time)
🍫 Embracing the Local Culture
After Day 4 of the clinic, we visited Atucun, a chocolate factory located in Comayagua. This factory won second place for best chocolate worldwide in a competition held in Paris.
There, we learned about the process of making fine chocolate and all the steps involved. We had the pleasure of sampling many types of chocolate and received an in-depth tour from Efren. Thank you, Efren, for sharing your passion and Honduran culture with us!
Together, We Make a Difference
This mission wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible generosity and swift support of our patient community, dedicated associates, and trusted lab and specialist partners. In just two weeks, we raised $5,000 - which helped us close much of the gap in funding needed to make this trip a reality. While this amount didn’t fully meet the mission’s financial requirements, it brought us close - and showed us how powerful our community can be when we come together.
A special thanks to Ashely, Cassandra, Clark, Colleen, Dentistry 4 Kids, Dr. Gloriana, Eugene, Dr. Jonas, Jose Ricardo, Leora, Mariana, Marta & Tatiana, Millen, Odete, Padua Dental Arts, Dr. Goodfellow, Sabrina, Dr. Steven, The Bento Family, The Delle Fave family, Theresa, Wayne. A heartfelt thank you also goes to K Dental for donating dental supplies and Copa Airlines, who generously covered the shipping costs for our supplies.
How You Can Support the Mission
By The Lake Dental is not just sending volunteers - we’re also contributing equipment, materials, and financial support to Dental Brigade. You can make a difference, too!
💙 Donate to support the cause!
Global Dental Brigades is an international movement of students and healthcare professionals working alongside local communities in Honduras, Panama, Guatemala, Belize, Ghana, and Greece. Their mission is to implement sustainable health systems in rural, under-resourced areas that would otherwise have little to no access to healthcare.
Bringing Smiles, One Patient at a Time
At By The Lake Dental, we believe in giving back - not just to our local community, but to those in need worldwide. We are honoured to be part of the Queen’s University Dental Brigade 2025 and look forward to making a lasting impact.
