What to Do If Your Child Knocks Out a Tooth: Advice from Our Dental Clinic

Accidents happen, and for children, dental trauma is unfortunately common especially during play, sports or falls. At By The Lake Dental, we know how distressing it can be for parents when a child knocks out a tooth. Acting quickly and correctly can make a significant difference in your child’s oral health and future smile.

The first step is to stay calm and identify whether the tooth is a baby tooth or a permanent one. If it’s a baby tooth, do not try to reinsert it, as this could damage the developing adult tooth underneath. Contact our dental office promptly so our dentists and dental team can assess the injury and monitor the area for infection or complications.

If it’s a permanent tooth, timing is crucial. Gently rinse the tooth with cold water, being careful not to touch the root. If possible, try to place it back into the socket or store it in a glass of cold milk or the child’s saliva. Then, visit our dental clinic immediately ideally within 30 minutes. The quicker the response, the higher the chances of saving the tooth.

Dental trauma can be frightening, but knowing what to do empowers you to protect your child’s oral health. Our dentists and dental team are always here to provide expert care and peace of mind during these urgent moments.

Did you know that more than 5 million teeth are lost each year due to sports-related injuries, resulting in nearly $500 million in dental restoration costs? If you or your kids play sports, ask us about our custom-fit mouthguards. They’re a simple, effective way to prevent dental injuries.
