How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Dental Visit

Many children feel uncertain about visiting our dental clinic for the first time, and that is completely normal. The good news is that parents play a much bigger role in shaping that first experience than they might realise. With a little preparation at home, you can help your child walk through the door feeling calm, curious and ready.

Why the first visit matters more than you think

We recommend booking your child’s first dental visit as a toddler or as soon as their first tooth starts to show. Starting early is not just about checking for problems. It is about helping your child become familiar with the environment and get to know our dentists and dental team before any treatment is ever needed. A child who visits the dentist early and regularly is far less likely to develop dental anxiety later in life.

How your attitude shapes the experience

Children are perceptive. They pick up on the emotions of the adults around them, including any nervousness about dental visits. The British National Healthcare Service (NHS) guidance on taking care of children's teeth is clear on this point: when you visit the dentist, be positive about it and make the trip feel like a normal, even enjoyable, outing. Avoid expressing your own anxieties in front of your child, even casually. A relaxed parent makes for a relaxed child.

What to say, and what to avoid saying, before the visit

The language you use in the days leading up to the appointment matters. The Ontario Dental Association (ODA), in their tips for kids, recommends keeping your language simple, positive and honest. Avoid words that introduce fear before it exists. Phrases like "it won't hurt" or "don't be scared" draw attention to the very things you want your child to feel calm about. Instead, describe the visit as a chance to meet someone who helps keep teeth strong and healthy. Let your child ask questions and answer them simply and truthfully.

Simple ways to prepare at home

A little role play goes a long way. In the days before the appointment, take turns being the dentist and the patient at home. Open wide, count teeth, use a toothbrush as a prop. Read a book together about visiting the dentist. On the day, let your child bring a favourite toy or comfort item. According to the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) guidance on your child's first visit, familiar objects help children feel secure in new environments.
