Dentist Alert: Is Your Kid’s Favourite Snack Causing Cavities?

If your child's snack box is full of cheese-flavoured crackers instead of candy, you might assume you are making the safer choice for their teeth. However, that assumption does not always hold up, and the reason has nothing to do with cheese.
At By The Lake Dental, our dentists and dental team see this surprise often. Parents who are careful about limiting sweets are sometimes unknowingly giving their child a snack that behaves a lot like candy once it hits their teeth.
It's Not the Cheese, It's the Starch
The cheese flavour in crackers like these is not the problem. The issue is the refined carbohydrates, ingredients like enriched wheat flour and starches, that make up most of the cracker itself. Real cheese is actually the opposite of harmful, but a cheese-flavoured cracker is mostly starch with a coating of flavour.
Why Sticky, Starchy Snacks Are So Hard on Teeth
According to the Canadian Dental Association, starchy foods break down into sugars once they are in your child's mouth, and if that food lingers, it feeds the bacteria that produce the acid behind cavities. Crackers are especially prone to this because they tend to break into small pieces that get stuck in the grooves and between the teeth, giving bacteria more time to do their work than a piece of candy that dissolves and clears away faster.
Frequency Matters More Than You Think
The Canadian Dental Association also points out that how often your child snacks matter just as much as what they snack on. A child who nibbles on crackers throughout the afternoon is giving their teeth repeated acid exposure all day, without giving saliva the chance to rinse things away in between. Sweets eaten with a meal are actually less damaging than the same sweets grazed on slowly, because saliva flow increases during meals and helps wash sugars away.
Better Snacks That Still Satisfy
The Canadian Dental Association recommends keeping cheese cubes and carrot sticks on hand as smart, satisfying alternatives that do not linger on teeth the way crackers do. Your child does not have to give up crunchy, cheesy flavours entirely, choosing the right version just makes a real difference for their smile.
The next time you are packing snacks, it is worth asking whether it is helping your child's teeth or working against them. And don’t forget to book your child every 4-6 months for a regular hygiene visit.
