Cleaning Your Mouthguard
Did you know By The Lake Dental provides sports mouthguards? With custom-made sports guards we ensure that you have more comfort and protection compared to the over-the-counter sports guards, which often are uncomfortable, impair speech and breathing, and do not provide the same level of protection.
By the way, if you're already a mouthguard user, have you been cleaning it properly?
Check out some tips to maintain a clean and bacteria-free mouthguard.
Toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste: This method involves gently brushing the mouthguard with a soft-bristle toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. This helps to remove bacteria and debris from the mouthguard.
Soap and water: This method involves using a mild, alcohol-free soap to clean the mouthguard. The mouthguard is gently brushed with soap and rinsed thoroughly with water.
Mouthwash: Mouthwash is used to clean the mouthguard because it has antimicrobial properties. The mouthguard is soaked in alcohol-free mouthwash for 30 minutes and then rinsed with water and allowed to dry.
Baking soda: Baking soda is used to remove debris and reduce bad odors from the mouthguard. It is mixed with water to create a paste, which is then used to gently brush the mouthguard.
Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar: This method involves soaking the mouthguard in vinegar for 30 minutes to remove bacteria and then soaking it in hydrogen peroxide for another 30 minutes to whiten and disinfect it.
Chemical cleaners (non-abrasive denture cleaners containing sodium hypochlorite): Over-the-counter non-abrasive denture cleaners containing sodium hypochlorite can be used to clean the mouthguard. The mouthguard is soaked in the solution for 5-10 minutes and then rinsed with water and allowed to dry. This method is best for a deeper clean.
