Tragic Consequences of Dental Neglect: A Call from By The Lake Dental’s Dentists

Updated: 2 days ago

A Tragic Tale About Untreated Dental Decay

The recent revelation surrounding the cause of former NFL player Mike Williams' death has sent shockwaves through North America. An initial case summary report from the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office indicates that Williams' demise was due to dental-related sepsis. This shocking revelation motivates our dentists and dental team at By The Lake Dental to shed light on the urgent need for increased awareness and access to dental care, pledging to champion this cause for our community.

Mike Williams tragically passed away on September 12th, 2023, in Tampa, Florida, following a construction accident that occurred on August 21. The incident involved heavy supplies landing on his head, resulting in severe injuries. Despite being admitted to an intensive care unit, Williams went into cardiac arrest and had to be intubated and sedated.

The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office released a preliminary report, listing Williams' cause of death as “bacterial sepsis with cerebral abscesses and necrotizing lobar pneumonia due to multiple caries and retained tooth roots.” This shocking revelation underscores the devastating consequences of untreated dental decay, with cardiovascular disease listed as a contributing factor.

Chris Wilkerson, spokesperson for the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office, highlighted the rarity of such cases, stating that, based on county records dating back to the mid-’80s, this is the first known death attributable to dental-related sepsis. The unprecedented nature of Williams' case underscores the need for heightened awareness regarding the potential dangers of untreated dental issues.

Mike Williams – A Football Star Remembered

Drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft, Mike Williams had a remarkable career, earning recognition as the Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year in his debut season. Hailing from Buffalo, New York, Williams played four seasons with the Buccaneers before being traded to his hometown team, the Buffalo Bills.

His career statistics boast 223 receptions for 3,089 yards and 26 touchdowns across 63 NFL games. Beyond his athletic achievements, Williams' untimely death serves as a stark reminder that even celebrated figures are not immune to the potentially fatal consequences of dental neglect.

The Global Impact of Untreated Dental Decay

Williams' case echoes a larger global issue – the prevalence of untreated cavities and the associated health risks. With nearly two billion people suffering from untreated cavities globally, it is evident that more must be done to address the barriers to dental care access and encourage preventive measures.
