Could a healthy smile help you live longer? According to a new study, keeping your natural teeth might do more than just improve your appearance, it could significantly boost your chances of living to 100.
At By The Lake Dental, your favourite dental office in Ajax and Scarborough, our dentists and dental team always emphasize the importance of maintaining your oral health. Now, emerging research proves just how crucial a healthy smile is to your overall well-being and even your longevity.
Study Finds Connection Between Natural Teeth and Longevity
A 2025 study published in JMIR Aging explored the link between tooth loss (edentulousness) and life expectancy. Conducted by researchers in China, the study analyzed data from over 4,000 individuals aged 80 to 100 using the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey.
Here’s what they found:
14.3% of participants reached the age of 100.
Among those centenarians, individuals with at least one natural tooth were significantly more likely to live longer.
In a narrowed analysis of participants followed for two years, only 17.7% of those without teeth (edentulous) reached 100, compared to 82.3% of those with natural teeth.
Statistically, having natural teeth increased the odds of becoming a centenarian.
This strong association remained consistent even after researchers adjusted for lifestyle habits, medical conditions, and other factors. Oral health is tied to access to healthy habits like nutrition, being a non-smoker, and practicing healthy hygiene.
What Does This Mean for You?
The presence of natural teeth was clearly linked to an increased probability of living longer. This underscores something we emphasize daily at our dental clinic: your overall health starts in the mouth.
Tooth loss doesn’t just affect your smile. It’s associated with:
Difficulty eating nutritious foods
Higher risk of dementia
Increased chances of stroke and heart disease
Compromised immune function
That’s why regular hygiene visits and dental check-ups at By The Lake Dental are so important, especially as you age.
